Generally when I do race recaps, I try to include my mile time splits or some review of the method to my madness on how I ran the race…This time though, my Nike+ tracking did not track my splits properly, and I literally had zero plan for running the race. So instead, this recap is largely just photos (which perhaps is a more fitting type of recap for someone who runs as slowly as I do! hah)!
While I’ve run other races with Courtlyn in the past, we preferred to go at our own separate paces during the race, so this half-marathon was the first that I actually ran with someone. Despite him running a training half-marathon with a 7:30/mile average pace, Justin stuck back with me to run at a 10:30/mile average pace the whole time, and I actually really enjoyed having someone to run with!
We ran a little more than the first two miles together, then I switched to the run-walk-run approach, while Justin kept running the whole thing like way more of a champ. (For me, that meant that while he maintained the steady 10-10:30 minutes/mile pace the whole time, I alternated between that, sporadically walking for 30 seconds and then running faster until I caught back up to Justin…)
…Generally, the whole concept behind Jeff Galloway’s “run-walk-run method” is walking at very set, specific intervals…I did not do that…instead I just walked through water stations and threw in other occasional 30 second walk breaks throughout.
I really, really loved the course because it was super flat and fast! And the last chunk of the race was all along the beach which is always gorgeous! We ended up finishing in 2:18:57, or rather, I finished in 2:18:57, while Justin crossed the finish line one second ahead of me! 🙂
Bottom line: great race, fun time, totally recommend it!
